ASEAN Issues Statement Supporting Ceasefire and Peaceful Resolution in Cambodia-Thailand Border Dispute
Kuala Lumpur, July 27, 2025 — The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has issued a formal statement expressing deep concern over the ongoing border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand. The statement comes after a special meeting hosted by Malaysia, the current ASEAN Chair, aimed at de-escalating tensions and promoting peace in the region.
The joint statement emphasizes that the conflict has resulted in a rising number of casualties, destruction of public properties, and displacement of civilians along the border. ASEAN members called on both Cambodia and Thailand to exercise maximum restraint and to immediately cease hostilities. The organization urged the two nations to return to the negotiating table to restore peace and stability, in line with the principles of the United Nations Charter, the ASEAN Charter, and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia.
According to the statement, ASEAN remains committed to supporting diplomatic efforts to resolve the dispute peacefully. The organization also expressed support for the ongoing efforts led by Malaysia to facilitate dialogue between the two countries and to ensure the implementation of a ceasefire.
The special meeting was attended by Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, along with other regional and international representatives, including envoys from the United States and China. Both external parties reasserted their support for regional stability and peaceful conflict resolution.
Leaders emphasized that the immediate ceasefire was a crucial step toward de-escalating violence and building confidence among the affected communities. They reaffirmed ASEAN’s commitment to fostering peace, stability, and sovereignty within member states and called for continued diplomatic engagement to resolve the dispute.
Further updates on the situation will be provided as Cambodia and Thailand work with ASEAN to implement confidence-building measures and achieve a long-lasting resolution.
